Eligibility.

This competition is open to all students undertaking a recognised first level dental technology course within the UK. It is also open to recently qualified technicians, qualified for less than two years at the time of the competition. You do not need to be a member of the OTA to apply.

You may participate in this award more than once unless:

  1. You have previously won the award.
  2. You applied in a previous year but failed to submit an application by the deadline date.

Details.

The competition will consist of three parts:

  • Part 1: An orthodontic removable appliance constructed on a supplied model to the specified requirements on the laboratory prescription form.
  • Part 2: A free choice orthodontic removable appliance constructed on the supplied model in accordance with the information supplied on.
  • Part 3: A written submission of no more than 500 words justifying the design, materials and construction techniques used for part 2.

Competition packs containing models and information relevant to the competition are posted to the participants upon receipt of a completed application form.

The judges are nominated by the OTA Council but always includes the President.

All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation upon the close of the competition.

The Grand Prize.

The winning submission will receive a grand prize of:

  1. A cheque for £750.
  2. Certificate of achievement.
  3. A complimentary evening dinner at the next OTA conference.
  4. Invitation to attend the BOS awards ceremony at the next conference

  1. The competition consists of three parts:

  1. Models and prescriptions for both appliances will be supplied in a competition pack on receipt of a completed application form.
  1. A unique candidate number will be supplied in the competition pack. This is the only identification mark permitted on entries.
  2. The closing date for applications is the 30th June 2022.
  3. All completed entries must be received no later than the 31st July 2022.
  4. All applicants will be notified in writing as to the outcome, no later than 1 month from the closing date.
  5. Entries will be judged by a panel of two representatives from the Orthodontic Technicians Association (OTA) Council and a representative from the British Orthodontic Society.
  6. The judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the outcome.
  7. The OTA will retain copyright on all work entered and may use it for publicity purposes with the appropriate acknowledgements.
  8. The Prize will consist of:

Invitation to BOS conference Awards presentation

  1. All participants will receive a ‘Certificate of Participation’.
  2. You may not participate in this competition if you have previously won the award or applied in a previous year but did not submit an application by the deadline date.

The OTA does not take responsibility for any entries lost in the post, therefore, we recommend you return your entries via recorded mail.

 

OTA Sponsored Student Places.

The OTA reserves 25 free student tickets for its conference each year. These places are available to:

  1. All trainee/student dental technicians currently enrolled on a registered dental technology college course.

Nominations will be accepted from any college/educational institute representative, providing a course in dental technology, or from any member of the OTA, who oversees the training of someone fulfilling the above criteria. Nominations will be considered on a first-come-first-served basis.

The successful nominees will receive a Day Delegate Package. This package covers attendance at all Saturday lectures and lunch, however, successful candidates will be required to fund their own travel expenses.

In return for this free package, the successful nominees will be expected to assist the OTA council members during the conference. They may also be expected to provide a short written statement for the OTA newsletter discussing the conference and experience gained from attendance.
